Anika currently lives and works in Tkarón:to, “the place where the trees are standing in the water” (Kanienʼkéha), on Turtle Island, colonially known as “Toronto, Canada.” As a second-generation settler on this land, Anika is committed to evolving their understanding of the longstanding histories of violence and resilience that have allowed for them to reside here. They take responsibility for their role on this land, which is governed by Treaty 13, making all inhabitants of the land treaty people. It is the traditional territory of many nations including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishinaabe, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, and the Wendat peoples; it is also home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. Anika acknowledges the past, present, and future caretakers and stewards of this land that have gone both recorded and unrecorded since time immemorial. Learn why this is important.
